National Literacy Trust publishes results of children's book ownership survey

The National Literacy Trust has published the results of a survey of more than 42,000 children on book ownership.

The survey found that 9.4% of schoolchildren in the UK between the ages of 8 and 18 do not own a single book and that these children are four times more likely than children who do own their own books to be below the expected standard in reading for their age.

Boys were almost twice as likely as girls to say that they did not own any books and young people between the ages of 14 and 16 were twice as likely to not own books as 8-11 year olds. Children who receive free school meals are also more likely not to own books than their peers.

The publication of the research coincides with the launch of the National Literacy Trust's Christmas Stories campaign which aims to provide books for disadvantaged children.
