Inspiring outdoor learning in the heart of Dorset

At Pogles Wood Explorers we offer a wide range of outdoor learning experiences to learners of all ages. Our learning programme for schools offers sessions linked to maths, English, art, history, geography, DT, music, science and PSHE. We encourage schools to get their pupils out of the classroom to experience active learning, get involved in team work and develop life skills - whatever the weather. We can also come into your school to deliver outdoor learning lessons in the school grounds. We have run a range of literacy projects in the woods including 'Tales in the Trees' and 'Woodland Words' and an exciting maths project for KS1 pupils, 'Muddy Maths'. We have a wonderful barn which we use as our classroom, an outdoor learning area, two fantastic compost toilets and, of course, a camp fire! We also run CPD sessions for teachers in the form of staff meetings, INSET and days out in the woods (and we have been known to host end of term parties for school staff too!).

Our Y5-6 class had a very enjoyable and worthwhile trip to Pogles Wood, with a focus on developing teamwork by solving maths problems outside. Working outside was immensely motivating (they often didn’t realise they were even doing maths!) and the children were very keen to complete their challenges, asking to continue in their breaks and lunchtime. The opportunity to develop the teamwork and individual skills of resilience, perseverance, learning from each and the importance of discussion, was invaluable. Taking the time to establish this as a class ethos near the start of the year is immensely valuable and has already impacted on our work in class. The children remember how they built up these skills throughout the day, giving advice to each other and getting better with each challenge. Plus, as a teacher, it has given me a wealth of knowledge about the children and lots of things to refer back to when children feel challenged in class. Teaching standards are high, with staff (who are ex-teachers) spending lots of time beforehand matching activities to my requests and working extremely well with the children on the day. I would wholeheartedly recommend a visit to Pogles – it is incredibly good value for money and has repercussions for the children’ learning throughout the year. I understand that Pogles work with children of all ages (and adults) and I can see how it would benefit all children to work in such a lovely, nurturing environment.
